Bethnahrin National Council commemorates Martyrs’ Day

BETH NAHRIN — Under the slogan Our Martyrs are the Banner of Victory for Our People, the Bethnahrin National Council (Mawtbo Umthoyo d’Bethnahrin, MUB) issued a statement in commemoration of the MUB’s Martyrs’ Day. The statement underscored the enduring sacrifices of the Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) people’s martyrs and their relentless struggle for freedom in their homeland of Beth Nahrin (Mesopotamia).

The MUB began its statement by designating 10 October as the Day of Remembrance of the Martyrs, hailing it as a sacred day in the annals of the history of the Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) people and the ongoing struggle for liberty. The statement earnestly called upon all patriots and advocates of freedom to unite on this day of national significance.

Highlighting the pivotal role of Hawro (Comrade) Abjar, who sacrificed his life in the Zagros Mountains on 10 October 1999, the MUB emphasized that his heroic resistance against occupation charted a new path to emancipate the Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) people from subjugation and annihilation. Hawro Abjar, unwavering in his commitment to the philosophy of freedom, stands as an exemplary figure for every member of the MUB, said the statement.

The MUB acknowledged the subsequent legacy of resistance, epitomized by martyrs like Hawro Jodi, Hawro Matai Rabo, and Hawro Athro, noting that their sacrifices embodied the collective spirit of the Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) people and nation. This legacy further bolstered courage, sacrifice, cultural awareness, and social nationalist activities, permeating throughout the community, they stated.

Refusing to succumb to the genocidal ambitions of dominant powers, the martyrs chose the historical richness and heritage of Mesopotamian civilization as well as a new philosophy of life as their guiding principles, said the statement.

In confronting present-day political conspiracies and the perilous designs of genocidal governments, the MUB asserted that the heroic resistance exemplified by its martyrs serves as the antidote. The martyrs, by carrying the banner of victory, have laid the foundation for the free future of the Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) people.

The MUB concluded its statement with a resounding call:

“As we commemorate all the martyrs of the Bethnahrin National Council and our people on 10 October, we urge our national community to rally around the values of national unity and freedom that the martyrs have forged, ensuring their protection and continuation.”
