Iraq Prime Minister al-Sudani addresses Shigur delegation, stresses commitment to reconstruction and compensation

BAGHDAD — During a meeting with a delegation form Shigur (Shengal / Sinjar) representing various ethnic and religious communities, Iraqi Prime Minister Muhammad Shia al-Sudani emphasized the government’s dedication to making decisions that reflect the sacrifices of the people and support their desire to remain in their homeland.

He expressed that special attention is granted to the Shigur due to the injustices it endured under the Islamic State (ISIS) and other extremists, and it is the government’s obligation to address these past wrongs. Rebuilding Sinjar and improving local services were key issues raised by the people during the meeting. They highlighted the ongoing displacement crisis stemming from the lack of effective local administration and the failure to meet the public’s needs.

The delegation urged the government to disburse the financial compensation designated for them, as a vital step in aiding recovery and rehabilitation in the area.

Joseph Saliwa, Vice President of the Beth Nahrin Patriotic Union (Huyodo d-Bethnahrin Athroyo, HBA) and former Member of the House of Representatives, expressed disappointment in the government’s handling of the situation. He emphasized the importance of recognizing the roots of the people who have contributed to the country and expressed hope for a more contemporary perspective that appreciates their presence and resilience in the land of their ancestors.
