Christian Front in Lebanon urges international protection from militia forces amid rising tensions
BEIRUT — Amid growing concerns over the escalation of conflict between Israel and Hamas spilling into Lebanon, the Christian Front convened its regular meeting in Ashrafieh, Beirut, urging strict adherence to international resolutions, particularly UN Resolutions 1559 and 1701. These resolutions explicitly call for the dissolution and disarmament of both Lebanese and non-Lebanese militias.
Accusing Iranian-backed Hezbollah of wielding control over decisions regarding peace and war, the Christian Front expressed worry about the group’s persistent efforts to embroil Lebanon in the Gaza conflict. The motive behind such actions, as alleged by the Christian Front, is to advance Iran’s strategic interests and garner support for any future negotiations.
The Front decried the practice of displacing residents in border areas, particularly in Christian villages, using them as human shields. It appealed to the Lebanese Army and security agencies to safeguard the remaining security and stability, cautioning against Lebanon being drawn into a destructive war.
Additionally, the Front advocated for the extension of the authority Lebanese Army Commander Joseph Aoun, deeming it a national duty to prevent a security vacuum. The Front praised Aoun’s leadership during Lebanon’s challenging times, rejecting any attempts to appoint an alternative army commander amid an existing presidential vacuum.
Highlighting Iranian militia attempts to marginalize Christians and replace them with agents serving a destructive agenda, the Front asserted that no time should be wasted in appointing a president under Iranian militia control. It emphasized that a presidential vacuum, pending relief from Iranian influence, is preferable to electing a figurehead president subject to Iranian disposition.
In a call to action, the Front urged Lebanese expatriates to form a united force abroad, focusing on implementing international resolutions. This collective effort aims to safeguard Lebanon and its people from what the Front perceives as Iranian occupation.
