Sweden commits $682 million in military aid to Ukraine, Canada to send 800 drones

STOCKHOLM / OTTAWA — Months after the US halted weapon shipments to Ukraine, and in the wake of the fall of the city of Avdiivka to the Russian Army, Sweden announced its intention to provide military equipment valued at $682 million to Kiyv, marking its largest aid package to date.

The aid package will include artillery shells, air defense systems, boats, underwater weapons such as mines and torpedoes, along with the training of Ukrainian soldiers.

During a press conference, Swedish Defense Minister Pål Jonson emphasized that the continuation of support is a humanitarian imperative, given Russia’s initiation of an illegal, unjustified, and indefensible war. He further asserted that the aid is essential for ensuring the long-term security of the northern European country.

Meanwhile, the Canadian government announced plans to dispatch over 800 Sky Ranger R-70 drones to Ukraine, beginning in spring 2024. The Canadian Ministry of Defense highlighted the critical role these aircraft play in Ukraine’s conflict with Russia, serving in surveillance, intelligence gathering, and supply transport, including ammunition. The total cost of the drones exceeds $70 million, part of a broader military aid commitment of $370 million to Ukraine.
