Syriac Union Party concludes 4th conference with strategic decisions and new leadership
ZALIN, North and East Syria — The Syriac Union Party (SUP) in Syria recently concluded its highly anticipated 4th conference, held in Zalin (Qamishli) on 3 March, marking a significant milestone in the ongoing quest for unity, progress, and the protection of the rights of the Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) people. The conference served as a dynamic forum for in-depth discussions on a wide range of political, organizational, and national issues facing the community.
In a final statement released following the conference, the SUP outlined a series of strategic decisions and recommendations aimed at shaping its future trajectory and advancing the interests of its constituents. Emphasizing the democratic ethos of the gathering, the statement highlighted the active participation of delegates and their unwavering commitment to collective organizational work and responsibility.
At the heart of the conference’s deliberations were the pressing challenges confronting the Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) community, both within Syria and beyond. From addressing issues of political representation and minority rights to ensuring the continued vitality of the Democratic Autonomous Administration of the Region of North and East Syria (DAARNES), delegates engaged in robust discussions aimed at charting a course forward in an increasingly complex and volatile geopolitical landscape.
Among the key outcomes of the conference were the approval of various reports detailing the party’s activities and achievements, the election of a new council comprising 21 members, and the election of Sanharib Barsom and Shamiram Danho as Co-Chairs, alongside the establishment of a Disciplinary Committee to oversee party affairs. The election of new leadership signals a fresh chapter for the Syriac Union Party, characterized by a renewed commitment to unity, inclusivity, and proactive engagement with key stakeholders.
In addition to internal organizational matters, the conference also addressed critical national and regional issues affecting the Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) community. Delegates reaffirmed the party’s unwavering support for a political solution to the Syrian conflict, grounded in UN and international resolutions, and reiterated their commitment to meaningful participation in shaping the country’s future.

In an interview with Suroyo TV, newly elected Co-Chair Barsom expressed gratitude for the trust bestowed upon the co-chairship and pledged to vigorously defend the rights of the Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) people in Syria. He highlighted the conference’s emphasis on strengthening DAARNES and enhancing the meaningful participation of all community members in decision-making processes.
Echoing Barsom’s sentiments, Co-Chair Danho underscored her unwavering commitment to safeguarding the rights and interests of the Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) people in their ancestral homeland of Beth Nahrin (Mesopotamia).
