Swedish activist spotlights forgotten history of women of Beth Nahrin

SÖDERTÄLJE, Sweden — Marie Samre, an activist and advocate for women’s and youth rights within the Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) community in Södertälje, Sweden, has embarked on a mission to bring recognition to 12 overlooked women from the history of Beth Nahrin (Mesopotamia).

As the founder of Kvinnovation, an organization dedicated to promoting gender equality and empowering women in a nurturing environment, Samre’s work has earned her acclaim and numerous awards in Södertälje.

Samre lamented the historical marginalization of women, whose contributions have often been overshadowed by men in mainstream narratives. Determined to rectify this imbalance, she conducted extensive research to spotlight the pivotal roles played by women throughout history.

Utilizing social media platforms, Samre disseminates short clips accompanied by informative content, aiming to educate and inspire young people by introducing them to the often-overlooked achievements of women.

On the occasion of International Women’s Day, Kvinnovation published a list of 12 remarkable women and leaders from Beth Nahrin’s rich history.

Samre aspires to set a positive example for youth, encouraging them to embrace the legacy of the women of Beth Nahrin and recognize their enduring impact on history.
