Member of Akitu Preparatory Committee Rubel Bahho: Akitu embodies Syriac people adherence to their national roots

NORTH AND EAST SYRIA — In comments to our news desk, member of the Akitu Preparatory Committee Rubel Bahho stated that after the fall of empires of the Syriac (Aramean-Chaldean-Assyrian) people, their heritage and culture were subjected to obliteration attempts.

“Despite the obliteration attempts, Syriac people continued to celebrate their national holidays, including the Akitu,” Bahho added.

Bahho declared that in the past, the Akitu Festival was celebrated over 12 days, but nowadays, Akitu Festival is limited to 1 day, 1 April.

He stated that that the Syriac Union Party (SUP) in Syria took upon itself to achieve the national goals of Syriac people, including the celebration of their national holidays.

“With the SUP tireless efforts, Akitu became an official holiday in the Democratic Autonomous Administration of the Region of North and East Syria,” said Bahho, indicating that the Syriac people celebrate their national holidays in North and East Syria to preserve their national presence in their homeland of Beth Nahrin (Mesopotamia).

Bahho stated that the joint Consultation and Coordination Committee of the political parties of the Syriac people recently further emphasized the importance of Akitu Festival, through their speeches and folklore performances.
