TURKEY: Syriac expatriates participate in Easter rituals in historic Tur Abdin
MEDYAD, Turkey — In an unprecedented event this year, a significant number of Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) expatriates joined in Easter Monday rituals in Medyad (Midyat) city and the villages of the historic Tur Abdin region, located in southeastern Turkey.
As customary, Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) people congregated in Medyad at the monastery of Mor Hubel and Mor Abrohom, renowned for its shrines of the deceased.
The Divine Liturgy was presided over by Syriac Orthodox Archbishop of Tur Abdin, Mor Timotheos Samuel Ataş.
Following the Divine Liturgy, the priests, accompanied by attendees, proceeded to the shrines of the deceased to offer prayers for their souls.
In line with religious and cultural traditions, believers exchanged colored eggs, cheese, and sweets.
In related news, a large gathering of Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) people assembled in Anhil village, predominantly consisting of Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) expatriates.
They observed Easter Monday prayers for the deceased, led by priest Jirjis Bar Kasho.
This marks the first time in 40 years that Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) expatriates have visited the shrines of the deceased in Anhil village in Turkey on Easter Monday.
