UN envoy warns of rising terrorism threat in Syria, Violations Documentation Center reports Turkish transfer of proxy-fighters from Syria to Kurdistan Region of Iraq

NEW YORK — UN Special Envoy to Syria Geir Pedersen informed members of the UN Security Council that the threat of terrorism is re-emerging in Syria, with expectations of a doubling of Islamic State (ISIS) attacks this year, putting civilian lives at risk.

Pedersen warned the Security Council about the delicate security situation in Syria, emphasizing that the threat of regional conflict in Syria remains, amid the escalation of Israeli raids.

He urged the Council to continue peace negotiations led by Syria.

In related news, the Violations Documentation Center (VDC-NSY), a human rights organization, reported that Turkish forces have transferred 300 former members of the Islamic State (ISIS) to the Berwari Bala area in Nohadra (Duhok). These fighters have reportedly been housed in Turkish military bases.

The report highlighted that Turkish forces have recruited thousands of Syrians from occupied areas in exchange for money, exploiting poverty and unemployment in regions occupied by Turkey.
