Human Rights Watch condemns Turkey’s support for war crime perpetrators in Syria

ANKARA — Amid daily crimes committed by Turkish forces in occupied Syrian territories and the Turkish authorities’ welcoming of those responsible for atrocities, Human Rights Watch (HRW) has condemned Turkey’s sponsorship of these perpetrators.

In a recent report, HRW accused Turkey of committing serious crimes and highlighted its warm reception of leaders from Turkish-backed factions of the Syrian National Army (SNA) such as Hamzat and Sultan Suleiman Shah. Notably, the report mentioned Devlet Bahçeli, leader of the Nationalist Movement Party (Milliyetçi Hareket Partisi, MHP), and Alaettin Çakıcı, leader of the Turkish mafia.

The HRW report confirmed that leaders of these militias are accused by the US of committing major human rights violations and overseeing further abuses by their groups, both of which are subject to US sanctions.

HRW emphasized that Turkish authorities not only fail to address these violations but also encourage those responsible, indicating a blatant disregard for accountability, justice, and future stability in the region.
