SYRIA: Co-Chair of Syriac Union Party Barsom condemns Syrian regime’s attacks on Dayro Zcuro, cites broader regional conflict
NORTH AND EAST SYRIA — Following the recent assaults by the Syrian regime and its National Defense Forces (NDF) on the towns and villages of Dayro Zcuro (Deir ez-Zor), North and East Syria, countryside, the Syriac Union Party (SUP) issued a statement condemning these actions, noting that such behavior from the regime is neither new nor surprising.
Sanharib Barsom, SUP Co-Chair, emphasized that the Syrian and Iranian regimes have consistently attempted to undermine the Democratic Autonomous Administration of the Region of North and East Syria (DAARNES). According to Barsom, the latest attacks are part of a broader strategy, including the organization and support of a so-called “tribal army” aimed at destabilizing the region.
Barsom also highlighted that these attacks are occurring amidst the ongoing regional power struggle between the United States and Iran. He suggested that Iran is attempting to weaken the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and DAARNES by targeting US forces — key SDF and DAARNES partners.
Furthermore, Barsom pointed out that the cooperation between Russia, Turkey, Iran, and Syria does not benefit the Syrian people. All parties are seeking to dismantle the DAARNES political project and the SDF, which they perceive as a threat to their regional ambitions, he said.
Barsom asserted that the Syrian regime is avoiding a political resolution to the Syrian crisis, instead resorting to military tactics to regain control with the backing of its allies. He expressed confidence in the SDF’s ability to repel these attacks and continue to protect the region and its people.
