Christian communities in North and East Syria celebrate Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

QABRE HEWORE, North and East Syria — The Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) communities in Gozarto (Jazira) Canton, North and East Syria, celebrated the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary with religious rituals, hymns, and the traditional distribution of grapes to the faithful.

The villages of Shalhoumiya and Tel Jhan in the Qabre Hewore (Qahtaniyah) countryside marked the holy feast with significant participation. Syriac Orthodox Archbishop of Gozarto and Euphrates Mor Maurice Amsih, presided over the Divine Liturgy in Tel Jhan, accompanied by priests and deacons.

In an interview, Archbishop Amsih shared that believers from various villages, including Tel Jhan, Shalhoumiya, Grke Shamo, and Muallah Abbas, gathered to observe the feast. He explained that, according to Christian tradition, the Virgin Mary was assumed into heaven due to her purity, preventing her body from decomposing.

The Syriac Security Forces (Sutoro) and Sutoro Women ensured the safety of the Divine Liturgies in Shalhoumiya and Tel Jhan.

The Feast of the Assumption was also celebrated in churches in Zalin (Qamishli), Dayrik (Malikiyah), and across North and East Syria.
