Turkish bombardment escalates in northern Iraq’s Nohadra (Duhok) Governorate, forcing mass displacement and widespread destruction

NOHADRA, Kurdistan Region of Iraq — The Turkish Army has intensified its air and ground bombardment across various areas of Nohadra (Duhok) Governorate in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, with recent strikes targeting the Amedya (Amedi) District and five villages on Mount Matina.

This relentless assault has sparked fires in the villages and nearby fields, causing extensive material damage to properties and forcing the displacement of numerous families. Residents from these villages, as well as from seven others in the Jabal Matina and Batoufa regions, have fled to the center of Amedya for safety.

Since the beginning of July, Turkish military operations, reportedly in collaboration with the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), have escalated across northern Iraq. These attacks have resulted in significant territorial occupation, particularly in Nohadra Governorate, leading to widespread displacement and the destruction of civilian property. The Iraqi authorities have remained largely silent, even as the People’s Defense Forces (HPG) of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) continue to resist the incursions.

Recently, a security agreement was signed between the Iraqi authorities and Turkey, which has been met with criticism from many quarters, who view it as a de facto endorsement of Turkey’s occupation of Iraqi lands.
