World Maronite Union urges presidential candidates to publicly present programs

BEIRUT — The World Maronite Union (WMU) called on all individuals planning to run for the Lebanese presidency to publicly present their presidential programs and share their visions with the Lebanese public via television and media. The WMU emphasized that, in the absence of a chance to express their opinions at the ballot box, the people must be engaged in the political process through open communication.

The federation outlined three critical points that must feature in any candidate’s presidential program: 1) ensuring national sovereignty by addressing the presence of militias, political parties, and armed groups that are funded and directed by foreign entities, undermining Lebanon’s independence; 2) implementing all relevant international resolutions with the help of the international community to secure lasting peace, a shared demand of the Lebanese people; and 3) overhauling a judiciary compromised by external interference to restore stability and protect citizens’ rights.

The statement stressed that the future president, along with the executive authority, must work diligently to uphold Lebanon’s sovereignty, enact peace initiatives, and foster reforms that benefit the nation. This includes advancing productive projects and safeguarding the rights of individuals and institutions.

The federation also encouraged Lebanese expatriates to actively participate in the leadership of their country. This could involve nominating candidates, sharing opinions on programs and policies, and bringing their expertise from the global community to improve Lebanese governance and administration.
