Council of Europe meeting highlights urgent need for human rights and political reform in Syria
STRABOURG — A pivotal meeting addressing human rights violations and the evolving political and humanitarian landscape in Syria convened at the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, France. Organized by the European Syriac Union (ESU) and refugee advocacy groups, the session aimed to shed light on the challenges facing Syria’s diverse communities amid ongoing crises.
The gathering brought together representatives from the ESU, the Syriac Clubs Union in Germany, and seven other organizations dedicated to refugee advocacy. Discussions focused on the systemic injustices and daily violations impacting Syrians of all backgrounds, including Syriacs (Arameans–Assyrians–Chaldean), Kurds, Yezidis, Arabs, Druze, and Ismailis.
Participants stressed the urgency of international action to halt crimes against civilians and emphasized the need for a comprehensive political process to restore stability. The meeting highlighted the importance of achieving justice for victims and fostering inclusive governance in Syria, ensuring representation for all communities in any future power-sharing arrangement.
Speakers called for global solidarity with the Syrian people, urging accountability for human rights abuses and a commitment to equality and reconciliation. They emphasized that sustainable peace in Syria requires an international approach that prioritizes justice, inclusivity, and the protection of fundamental rights.
