Armenia signs strategic partnership with United States, joins US-led coalition to defeat ISIS
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Armenia has officially joined the US-led Global Coalition to Defeat the Islamic State (ISIS) following the signing of a Strategic Partnership Framework with the United States.
The announcement came during a formal ceremony at the State Department in Washington, D.C., where US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan signed the agreement.
Significance of the Partnership
The framework outlines enhanced cooperation between the two nations, focusing on economic and security collaboration, the promotion of democracy, justice, inclusivity, and fostering cultural and educational exchanges.
At the ceremony, Blinken praised Armenia’s decision to join the Coalition and highlighted the country’s dedication to reinforcing its sovereignty and independence. “Armenia will join 87 other members working together to bring greater stability to the Middle East and beyond. We are deeply grateful for this engagement,” Blinken stated.
Blinken also commended Armenia’s ongoing reforms, emphasizing the government’s efforts to build a more just and equitable society.
Foreign Minister Mirzoyan described the agreement as “a strong framework that injects greater ambition into the areas of cooperation between Yerevan and Washington.”
The Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS
Established in 2014, the Coalition comprises 88 members, including countries and international organizations committed to eradicating ISIS. Its efforts span military operations, cutting off ISIS’s financial resources, countering extremist propaganda, stabilizing liberated areas, and supporting local forces.
While the Coalition has significantly reduced ISIS’s territorial control and leadership, it continues working to prevent the group’s resurgence, focusing on stabilization efforts in affected regions, particularly the Middle East and parts of Africa.
By joining the Coalition, Armenia aligns itself with international efforts to counter terrorism and promote stability on a regional and global scale. The partnership represents a milestone in US-Armenia relations and underscores Armenia’s commitment to contributing to collective security.
