SDC delegation meets with Druze spiritual leader Sheikh al-Hijri to discuss Syria’s future

QANAWAT, Syria — A delegation from the Syrian Democratic Council (SDC) met with Druze spiritual leader Sheikh Hikmat al-Hijri at his guesthouse in Al-Qanawat to address Syria’s critical situation and explore solutions for national unity and civil peace.

Following the fall of the previous regime, the SDC delegation, which included Co-Chair Layla Qara Man, Deputy Co-chair Ali Rahmun, and several council members, visited Sheikh al-Hijri in the southern Syrian town of Qanawat in As-Suwayda Governorate. The meeting aimed to strengthen communication and collaboration among Syria’s diverse communities during this pivotal period.

Focus on Civil Peace and Unity

During the discussion, the participants stressed the importance of maintaining civil peace and preventing a return to violence and conflict. They reaffirmed their commitment to preserving Syria’s territorial integrity and fostering cooperation among its various components.

The conversation also explored future visions for rebuilding Syria on civil and democratic foundations. The attendees emphasized the need to separate religion from the state, ensuring that government institutions remain neutral and fair to all citizens, regardless of their backgrounds.

Recognizing the Autonomous Administration Model

The Democratic Autonomous Administration of the Region of North and East Syria (DAARNES) was praised as a successful example of decentralized governance. The stakeholders viewed it as a potential model for broader decentralization in Syria, ensuring equitable representation for all regions and communities.

Addressing the Issue of Arms

The parties also discussed the pressing issue of arms control, agreeing on the need to transfer weapons to legal state authorities. They highlighted that this step should follow the formation of an inclusive transitional government and the cessation of hostilities across Syrian territories.

The meeting underscored a shared commitment to national unity and the pursuit of political solutions that align with the aspirations of the Syrian people. The attendees expressed hope for a democratic and civil Syria that rejects violence and guarantees equal rights for all its citizens.

This meeting marks a significant step in fostering dialogue and collaboration among Syria’s diverse communities during a time of immense challenges.
