Syriac Union Party delegation meets with Greek Orthodox-Rûm church leaders in Wadi Nasara, calls for a comprehensive National Christian Conference
VALLEY OF CHRISTIANS/HMOTH (Homs), Syria— As part of its tour through Syriac and Christian cities and villages in Syria, a delegation from the Syriac Union Party (SUP) in Syria met with Patriarch of the Greek Orthodox (Rûm) Church of Antioch Mor John X. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the patriarch’s pastoral visit to Wadi Nasara (Valley of Christians).
Led by SUP Co-Chair Shamiram Danho, the delegation met the Patriarch at the Patriarchal Monastery of St. George al-Humaira. The meeting focused on efforts to unify Christian discourse amid the dynamical and critical phase Syria is currently going through.
The SUP delegation addressed the urgency for a comprehensive Christian conference for all Eastern churches, along with political and civic organizations, to determine their common demands at this stage of the transitional political process and writing of a new Syrian constitution. The proposal was received positively. It is expected that an official meeting will be held in the near future to expand discussions on various issues of concern to the Syriac people, to the Christians-Rûm of Wadi al-Nasara, and broader in Syria in general.
The Syriac Union Party delegation also met with Greek Orthodox (Rum) archbishop of Akkar and its dependencies Metropolitan Basilios (Mansour). The delegation briefed the archbishop on its recent activities in various Syrian regions.
During the conversation, the broader situation in Wadi al-Nasara (Valley of the Christians) was on the table. The SUP delegation reiterated its call and emphasized the importance of unifying Christian discourse and its demands for the new Syrian Constitution, stressing the necessity of holding a comprehensive Christian conference.
