Mass graves discovered in Saraqeb reveal more evidence of atrocities of former Syrian regime
SARAQEB, Syria — Nearly five months after the fall of the former regime in Syria, new evidence continues to surface exposing the scale of atrocities committed during its final years in power.
In Saraqeb, located in western Edleb (Idlib), three mass graves have been uncovered, adding to the grim findings of a separate grave discovered recently near the city. That grave held the remains of eight victims, believed to have been executed by forces of the former regime.
Local media reported that forensic doctor Zaher al-Taqash confirmed the first of the newly discovered graves contained the remains of three individuals, including a young girl. Examination of the other two graves is ongoing.
While the forensic team has yet to provide details about the total number of remains in the three graves, a government source involved in the exhumation process revealed that eight mass graves have been identified so far in the countryside of Edleb.
The area was under the control of the Assad regime until 2020. Opposition factions and Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) took control late last year, shortly before the regime’s fall.
These findings provide further evidence of the brutality inflicted during the regime’s reign, raising hopes for accountability and justice for the victims of these crimes. Investigators are continuing their work to uncover the full scope of the atrocities committed in the region.
