Group of 34 political parties calls for immediate ceasefire in Jaramana and Sahnaya amid escalating sectarian violence
DARAMSUQ — A coalition of 34 political parties and organizations in North and East Syria, including the Syriac Union Party (SUP), issued a public statement voicing deep concern over the intensifying violence in the Daramsuq (Damascus) suburbs of Sahnaya and Jaramana. The coalition has called for an immediate ceasefire and urged all parties to prioritize reason and dialogue over vengeance and incitement.
The statement, released on Thursday, condemned the recent clashes, which have claimed innocent lives and exacerbated sectarian tensions among Syrians. “Resorting to violence and weapons to resolve disputes among the Syrian people in these difficult times is unequivocally condemned,” the statement read. “Such actions serve only the enemies of Syria and its people. Weapons bring nothing but more bloodshed and destruction, closing the doors to dialogue and understanding, which must be the sole path to addressing conflicts.”
The coalition called on all involved parties to halt hostilities immediately and embrace a spirit of national unity and public interest. It stressed the importance of avoiding sectarian, ethnic, or regional provocations.
Additionally, the statement urged political forces, community leaders, religious institutions, and civil organizations to take responsibility for calming tensions, mending divisions, and preventing the nation from descending into further internal conflict.
“Syria belongs to all its people, and what unites us far outweighs what divides us,” the statement concluded. “Let us preserve what remains of our social fabric, work together to stop the bloodshed, and build a nation founded on peace, justice, and equality.”
The events in Sahnaya and Jaramana, which began on 28 April, were reportedly triggered by the circulation of an audio recording, now shown to be disinformation, containing inflammatory religious remarks. The unrest has since spread to neighboring areas, raising concerns of further escalation and instability.
