American Syriac Union welcomes formation of Levantine National Council, praises the initiative as one of deep historical and symbolic importance
WASHINGTON, U.S. — Following the announcement of the formation of the Levantine National Council in Daramsuq (Damascus), Syria, the American Syriac Union (ASU) released a statement commending the initiative.
The ASU described the Council’s formation as a significant milestone not only for Christians in Syria but for Christian communities across the Middle East. The statement praised the Council as a bold and visionary step toward renewed representation, dignity, and unity.
The ASU highlighted the Council’s affirmation of the essential role of Christians in building a new Syria, “It reflects a commitment to a sovereign, pluralistic, and democratic Syria,” and a society rooted in freedom, equality, and justice. “For communities long marginalized, including Syriacs, Assyrians, Chaldean, and Greek Antiochians, this initiative hold deep historical and symbolic importance,” it stated.
Expressing solidarity with the Levantine National Council and all Christian communities in Syria, the ASU voiced full support for the Council’s vision of fair Christian representation in political and civic, the protection of religious, cultural, and linguistic rights, equal citizenship, and the embrace of diversity as a foundation for unity and strength.
In its closing remarks, the American Syriac Union expressed it belief that the establishment of the Levantine National Council will open the door to a new era of cooperation and national reconciliation. The organization pledged its unwavering support to help the Council realize its aspirations and build a brighter future for all Syrians.
