EU announces plans to lift some sanctions on Syria
DARAMSUQ — The European Union announced its intentions to lift of economic sanctions on Syria, following the decision by US President Donald Trump to remove US sanctions during his visit to Saudi Arabia.
In a statement, the EU clarified that lifting the sanctions aims to provide the Syrian people with an opportunity to reunify and rebuild an inclusive, pluralistic, and peaceful Syria, free from harmful foreign interference.
However, sanctions that targeted the Assad regime remain in place, reflecting the EU’s commitment to accountability. Security-related sanctions, including restrictions on weapons and technology that could be used for internal repression, will also continue.
The EU emphasized that it would introduce new restrictive measures against individuals violating human rights or contributing to instability in Syria. It also pledged continued collaboration with the Syrian Transitional Government (STG) to advance the aspirations of Syrians, safeguard human rights, and monitor progress on accountability, particularly concerning recent violence.
Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani welcomed the EU’s decision, noting that it followed the US move to lift sanctions and reflected extensive diplomatic efforts. During a joint press conference with Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, al-Shaibani praised the potential positive impact of the decision on Syria and the region, while commending Jordan’s role in advocating for sanctions removal.
