UN Security Council condemns bombing attack on Mar Elias Church

DARAMSUQ (DAMASCUS) — The United Nations Security Council has condemned the terrorist suicide bombing on the Greek (Rûm) Orthodox Mar Elias Church in Daramsuq (Damascus) which resulted in the martyrdom of 29 people and left nearly 60 others injured. 

In its statement, the UN Security Council expressed their deepest condolences to the families of victims and to the Syrian people, wishing a speedy recovery to the injured. The statement emphasized that terrorism in all its forms poses one of the most serious threats to international peace and security. It stressed the need to hold accountable those responsible for organizing, financing, and supporting such heinous terrorist acts and to bring them to justice. 

The UN Security Council also called for the protection of all Syrians, regardless of ethnic or religious affiliation. It urged all countries, in accordance with their obligations under international law and relevant UN Security Council resolutions, to actively cooperate with Syrian authorities in this regard. 

The Council reaffirmed that all terrorist acts are criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of their motives, perpetrators, or timing. They reiterated the necessity for all states to combat, by all means and in compliance with the UN Charter and international law, including human rights, refugee and humanitarian law, the threats posed by terrorism to global peace and security.
