SYRIA: Arrest of demonstrators causing broad public discontent in As-Suwayda
AS-SUWAYDA, Syria – The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) stated that the city of As-Suwayda has witnessed continuous public discontent due to the continued arrest of demonstrators by Syrian regime security forces.
Despite the release of several detainees following mediation between the regime and demonstrators by the elders of As-Suwayda, security authorities refused to release many others on the pretext of their evading from the compulsory military service with the Syrian Arab Army (SAA).
In mid-June, SOHR had declared the arrest of more than 10 demonstrators, as a result of their demonstration against the Syrian regime and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in the city of As-Suwayda. The demonstrations were also attacked by militias affiliated with the regime.
