USUP Secretary General Michel Mallo: Only Resolution 1559, neutrality, and a federal system can guarantee an independent Lebanon

BEIRUT — At a protest in Beirut, Secretary General of the Universal Syriac Union Party (USUP) in Lebanon Michel Mallo declared that USUP adheres to three basic points that will ensure the return of sovereignty and independence to Lebanon. He made his remarks during a multi-party protest in front of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) headquartered in downtown Beirut.

Mallo said that the Lebanese people are eager for freedom, sovereignty, and independence, and that the origins of the country’s economic crisis are absolutely political. USUP believes that the main problem complicating the crises in Lebanon is Hezbollah which it considers hostile to international and Arab societies and interferes in state affairs through threats of violence. This has brought Lebanon to an unprecedented stage of isolation which led to its economic and political collapse.

Mallo continued by affirming that the Universal Syriac Union Party adheres to three main points for the solution in Lebanon and a return to the country’s sovereignty and independence:

  1. The implementation of Resolution 1559 which includes disarming militias, including Hezbollah;
  2. Lebanon’s neutrality is essential, stressing the importance of standing in support of Syriac Maronite Patriarch His Holiness Béchara Boutros Raï in his fundamental demand that restores Lebanon’s distinguished presence;
  3. The application of the federal system that expresses social pluralism and will elevate Lebanon to the ranks of the developed world.
