Officials of North and East Syria meet with officials of Municipality of Rome
ROME — A delegation from the Democratic Autonomous Administration of the Region of North and East Syria (DAARNES), comprised of DAARNES Representative in Europe Abdulkarim Omar, Co-Chair of the DAARNES Representation in Switzerland Medya Hassan, and Spokeswoman of the Women’s Protection Units (YPJ) Roxan Mohammed, met with officials from the Municipality of Rome at the municipal headquarters.
During the meeting, the DAARNES delegation outlined the democratic principles underlying the DAARNES project, positioning it as a model for other Syrian regions aiming to establish a new democratic and decentralized Syria. They also emphasized the significant role of women in DAARNES institutions, where women make of 50% of leadership positions by statute.
Moreover, the DAARNES delegation shed light on the humanitarian and economic challenges faced in North and East Syria due to the prolonged crisis in Syria, which has endured for over 13 years. The discussions delved into Turkish violations against civilians, targeting vital infrastructure such as power plants, gas, and oil wells.
Expressing familiarity with the situation and developments in North and East Syria, the Italian delegation commended the resilience and sacrifices of the region’s people in confronting terrorism, recognizing their efforts on behalf of humanity. They also expressed admiration for the DAARNES experience and the significant role of women, both in combatting ISIS and actively participating in DAARNES institutions.
Furthermore, the Italian delegation conveyed their readiness to establish twinning arrangements between municipalities in Rome and North and East Syria. Additionally, they expressed willingness to contribute to the rehabilitation of essential service institutions, including drinking water and sewage systems, along with other development projects.
