Syriac Orthodox Priest Khuroyo Gabriel Akyüz reinstated to priesthood
MIRDE, Turkey — The Syriac Orthodox Patriarchate has announced the reinstatement of Khuroyo Gabriel Akyüz, priest of the Forty Martyrs Church in Mirde (Mardin), Turkey, in the historic region of Tur Abdin, to the priesthood.
The Patriarchate clarified that the priest had been defrocked in 2021 amid issues within the Archdiocese of Tur Abdin.
“After the resolution of those issues concerning the Mor Gabriel Monastery and the Mirde Directorate Endowments, his priesthood service has been reinstated,” the Patriarchate elaborated.
In a statement, the Syriac Orthodox Patriarchate blessed Khuroyo Gabriel’s return to his priestly duties, along with the restoration of his priestly garment and cross.
The Patriarchate further noted that this statement had been forwarded to clergy of the Tur Abdin Archdiocese and the Saffron Monastery Archdiocese.
