Syriac village of Hah named one of the most beautiful village in Merde (Mardin), Turkey

HAH, Turkey — The Syriac village of Hah (Anıtlı), located in Medyad (Midyat) District in southeastern Turkey’s Merde (Mardin) Province, has been recognized as one of the region’s three most beautiful villages, according to a report by GAP Gündemi.

The village is distinguished by its deep historical roots and rich cultural heritage, making it a prominent tourist destination for local and international visitors.

Hah is famous for its ancient stone houses and narrow streets that reflect traditional architectural styles, as well as its handcrafted silver jewelry, which is one of the village’s most notable artisanal crafts.

The village is also home to the first Syriac library in Turkey, serving as an important resource for preserving the rich Syriac heritage.

Among its landmarks is the Virgin Mary Church, one of the oldest churches in Christian history. This sacred site draws thousands of Syriac Christians annually, particularly on 15 August, during celebrations of the Feast of the Assumption.

Hah’s recognition extends beyond Turkey, with the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) including it in the “Best Tourism Villages — Upgrade Programme” for 2022. The historic Tur Abdin region, where Hah is situated, remains a focal point for cultural and religious tourism.

GAP Gündemi also highlighted the villages of Avina (Sürgücü) and Oğuz (Dara) as being among the three most beautiful villages in Merde.
