Chaldean–Syriac–Assyrian parties in Germany present list of demands to Iraqi Consulate in Frankfurt

FRANKFURT — A delegation composed of representatives from three Syriac (ArameanAssyrianChaldean) political parties in Germany visited the Iraqi Consulate in Frankfurt and delivered a letter outlining demands to ensure justice for Chaldean–Syriac–Assyrian people regarding the Christian quota seats and the rights of Iraqis in the diaspora, including enabling them to cast their votes in the Iraqi elections.

The delegation included member of the European Syriac Union (ESU) Merme Boudak, members of the Assyrian Democratic Movement (Zowaa) Magdalena Odisho and Ashur Odisho, and member of the Assyrian Democratic Organization (AD) Issa Massoud.

During discussions with the consulate, the delegation reaffirmed the importance of securing fair representation for the Chaldean–Syriac–Assyrian people in Iraq.

Iraq’s parliamentary elections are expected to take place this coming November, during which 329 members of parliament will be elected. These MPs will, in turn, elect the President of the Republic and ratify the election of the Prime Minister.

The Independent High Electoral Commission has already begun the process of registering political parties, candidates, and alliances intending to participate in the elections.

Five seats have been allocated for Christians in the Iraqi parliament. However, the parties representing the Chaldean–Syriac–Assyrian people under the Athra Alliance had previously submitted a request to the Iraqi government, demanding that Christian and other quota seats be reserved exclusively for members of the respective communities they are meant to represent. This would ensure fair and genuine representation of the Chaldean–Syriac–Assyrian people in parliament.
