Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party in submits draft proposal to Turkish Parliament
ANKARA — Turkey’s opposition Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (Halkların Eşitlik ve Demokrasi Partisi, DEM Party) submitted its anticipated draft proposal to Turkish Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş (Justice and Development Party, AKP) as part of efforts to advance peace and democracy in Turkey.
The draft was delivered by Deputy Group Chair Gülistan Kılıç Koçyiğit (DEM Party) and Parliamentary Secretary Saliha Aydınöz (Aydeniz) (Democratic Regions Party, DBP).
Koçyiğit emphasized the urgent need to establish the commission, confirming that the party had submitted its recommendations verbally and in writing.
She stressed the importance of making the commission operational as soon as possible.
The DEM Party is advocating for the legal formation of the commission, granting it broad and inclusive powers.
The proposal outlines a structure comprising 35 to 40 members, including representatives from political parties without parliamentary bloc status.
The initiative seeks to establish a political resolution process for the Kurdish issue on a more institutionalized foundation.
According to the party, the commission should ensure legitimate and democratic decision-making processes, operate under legal safeguards, as well as remain open to civil society participation.
As planned, the Parliament Speaker will review the proposals submitted by various parties.
Another meeting is expected to finalize details such as the commission’s exact composition and operational procedures.
