North and East Syria Official Gabriel Shamoun: Syrian Democratic Council appreciates members of Syriac Union Party standing in face of Turkish attacks

ZALIN, Syria — Co-Chair of the Syrian Democratic Council (SDC) Gabriel Shamoun told Suryoyo TV that the people of North and East Syria are living in a particularly difficult time for the region. With constant Turkish attacks, active Islamic State (ISIS) cells, the coronavirus pandemic, decreased access to water, and general economic hardship, living conditions have notably decreased.

Shamoun’s comments came during the organization of a two-day tent demonstration organized by the Syriac Union Party (SUP), the Syriac Progressive Youth Union, and the Syriac Women’s Union (SWU) against Turkey’s continued military aggression in North and East Syria.

“Today, the Syrian Democratic Council appreciates this stand, which is held by members of the Syriac Union Party, as well as by the Syriac Progressive Youth Union and the Syriac Women’s Union,” he said. “We support these positions, which reflect the people’s position in the region in general and the Syriac [Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean] people of the region in particular.”

Shamoun pointed out that Turkey is trying to build settlements and change the demography of the region. He expressed his condemnation of this policy and called on the international community to stand up and prevent Turkey from implementing policies that are not good for the Syrian people.
